The Gender & Medieval Studies (GMS) Group is a UK-based organization devoted solely to putting together an annual interdisciplinary conference, which furthers the study of medieval gender. The conference is an annual peripatetic event that has been running since at least the late 1980s (oral history suggests that it was running in 1987 at the latest) and traditionally takes place in early January.

It is geared as much towards postgraduate students as established scholars. A steering committee exists to help ensure the continuation of the conference from year to year.

2017 CONFERENCE
Gender, Places, Spaces, Thresholds

Christ Church University, Canterbury
12th – 15th January 2017

Keynote speakers: Anthony Bale, Leonie Hicks, Sheila Sweetinburgh

Call for papers open until 7th September 2016.

This is a Call for Papers for a three-day conference on the theme of ‘Gender and Place, Space, and Liminalities’ hosted by the long-running Gender and Medieval Studies Conference Series.

This year our venue is Canterbury Christ Church University which is on the site of St Augustine’s Abbey (founded in 613) close to Canterbury Cathedral.

We are looking for papers that explore the relationships between gender and medieval geographical, cultural, social, spatial, and imagined locations – as well as those which explore aspects of gender and liminalities. In viewing the materiality of place and space through the lens of gender, we wish to encourage both cross- and trans-disciplinary discourses concerning how gender is rendered stable and unstable via networks, objects (relics for example), individuals, communities, and exchanges in the Middle Ages.

Guardian Report on Academic Sexual Harassment

For those of us deeply concerned about the proliferation of sexual harassment and microagressions within academic contexts, it is gratifying to see the UK-base Guardian newspaper carrying a report of this as its headline article on Friday, August 26, 2016 (https://www.theguardian.com/education/2016/aug/26/sexual-harassment-of-students-by-university-staff-hidden-by-non-disclosure-agreements). Admittedly, it is a pity that the report was semi buried at the end … Read more
